A wider loop for a second day, with fewer people: the long corridors of Preah Khan, the island temple of Neak Pean in its basin, Ta Som and its fig tree, and Pre Rup, a good place to end the day at sunset.

A small temple of pink sandstone, 37 km north-east of town, with the finest carvings of Angkor. The road there runs through villages and palm sugar stalls.

About 65 km east of town, a huge temple from the same period as Angkor Wat, collapsed and covered in trees. Wooden walkways take you over the stones and through the galleries.

For a short time in the 10th century, Koh Ker was the capital of the Khmer empire. Its seven-tiered pyramid rises out of the forest, about 2 hours 30 by road. Few visitors make the trip.

A village of houses on stilts several metres high, on the edge of the great lake. You go by boat between the houses and through the flooded forest. Best when the water is high, from about August to December.

The sacred mountain and its waterfall

The holy mountain where the Khmer empire was founded in 802. A reclining Buddha carved in the rock, carvings in the river bed, and a waterfall where you can swim. The entrance ticket to the mountain is separate from the Angkor Pass.

Golden Silk Pheach

Rare Cambodian golden silk, near Banteay Srei

A family workshop run by friends of ours, near the temple of Banteay Srei. Here, golden silk is still made by hand from start to finish: the golden cocoons, the thread drawn from the pot, natural dyes and ikat patterns tied thread by thread, then the weaving on wooden looms. A rare craft that is part of Cambodia's heritage. Visit $10 per person, paid at the farm. Best combined with Banteay Srei the same day. Please book at least 48 hours ahead.
